What is
ANESTHESIA?
Anesthesia is a medically induced state in which medications are used to temporarily block or reduce pain, sensation, awareness, reflexes, and muscle movement to safely perform surgical procedures.
This allows patients to remain free of pain, minimizes unnecessary movements, and, when necessary, induces loss of consciousness, thereby enabling safe and precise surgical interventions.

General Anesthesia
It is achieved using inhalational anesthetic agents (e.g., sevoflurane) and intravenous anesthetic agents (e.g., propofol), often in combination with neuromuscular blocking agents, to ensure optimal surgical conditions and patient safety.
Local Anesthesia
It is commonly used for minor procedures, with local anesthetic agents such as lidocaine or bupivacaine injected near the procedural site to provide targeted pain control.
Regional Anesthesia
It includes spinal anesthesia, in which local anesthetics are injected into the subarachnoid space; epidural anesthesia, administered into the epidural space; and peripheral nerve blocks, which target specific nerves or nerve plexuses to provide regional pain control.
Sedation
Patients are typically drowsy or asleep but able to cooperate when needed, usually do not recall the procedure, and sedation is commonly used for endoscopy, pediatric dental care, MRI examinations, and other minimally invasive procedures.

Anesthesia Machine: Structure and Function
Equipped with an integrated mechanical ventilator, it is a sophisticated, high-precision device used during general anesthesia to continuously and safely deliver inhaled anesthetics and respiratory gases.
During general anesthesia, anesthetic and neuromuscular blocking agents suppress spontaneous breathing, leaving the patient fully reliant on mechanical ventilation for oxygenation and ventilation throughout the procedure.
Anesthesia Machine Disinfection and
Sterilization
An anesthesia machine is a highly sophisticated, expensive device used to support multiple patients. If the machine becomes contaminated by a patient during mechanical ventilation, the contaminated equipment can transmit infection to subsequent patients, resulting in patient-to-patient cross-infection.
After each use, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization procedures are required. However, it is not feasible to disinfect or sterilize the entire anesthesia machine. To prevent cross-infection and ensure patient safety during anesthesia, an antibacterial and antiviral filter must be installed in the breathing circuit between the patient and the anesthesia machine. In addition, all disposable components that come into contact with the patient should be discarded immediately after use to minimize the risk of contamination.
