Thank you for visiting the Korean Society of Anesthesia Patient Safety website.
In Korea, many major medical institutions have consistently maintained high standards of anesthesia patient safety through national (government-led) accreditation and evaluation programs aligned with established standards.
However, many small and medium-sized medical clinics and institutions performing surgery still do not meet international standards for anesthesia patient safety. Their facilities endanger patient safety during surgical procedures.
General anesthesia is a critical medical intervention that can be life-saving.
Without dependable anesthesia safety systems, safe and successful surgical care cannot be guaranteed.
In particular, safe general anesthesia requires advanced, high-quality anesthesia equipment and patient monitors. Additionally, when an anesthesia ventilator is used for general anesthesia, antiviral and antibacterial filters, along with various disposable accessories and devices, should be applied to prevent patient-to-patient infection (cross-infection). Once used, disposable medical materials must never be reused to prevent cross-infection and contamination.
KAAPS educates and guides surgery institutions in the following key areas:
1. Employment of qualified, board-certified anesthesiologists
2. Running of anesthesia safety equipment and facilities recommended by the World Health
Organization (WHO), the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA), and the
Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF)
3. Appropriate use of single-use medical devices and facilities to prevent patient-to-patient
infection
Through this education, we aim to improve anesthesia patient safety standards across all medical clinics and institutions in Korea.
Additionally, by identifying medical clinics and institutions that meet anesthesia patient safety standards and publishing lists with detailed information for the public, KAAPS helps patients choose safer facilities for surgery confidently.
